Barry has a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Exercise Science from the University of New South Wales, which he followed up immediately with a Master’s Degree in Physiotherapy at the University of Sydney.
Working with international rugby players, aspiring adolescent athletes, weekend warriors, and non-sporting injuries has provided Barry with extensive experience in all facets of musculoskeletal physiotherapy.
His work with professional rugby players in Australia (NSW Country Eagles, NSW Waratahs) and Britain (Newport Gwent Dragons) means he has strong experience in prescribing individualised and highly effective rehabilitation programs. His programs cover all facets of a patient’s return to activity (rehabilitation exercises, gym programs, conditioning/running programs, and return-to-contact programs) to take them from injury diagnosis to rehabilitation to return to activity and finally to injury prevention.
This is particularly important when it comes to managing complex chronic tendon pathologies such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, and adductor tendinopathy, as well as acute muscle/joint injuries and post-operative rehabilitation.
“Thanks to my extensive exercise physiology background, I’m a strong believer in patient-focused active rehabilitation, meaning that I alleviate my patients’ pain through the use of strength and mobility exercises. ‘Movement is medicine’ is a mantra that I swear by,” says Barry.
His five-year stint in a multi-disciplinary sports medicine clinic means that he knows how to collaborate with other health practitioners such as sports medicine physicians, paediatric physicians, podiatrists, psychologists, massage therapists, and exercise physiologists to achieve a common goal in helping a patient return to normal activity.
Barry’s own sporting interests:
Barry is a keen footballer (11-a-side and Futsal) and also enjoys playing volleyball. His New Year’s Resolution was to start running for exercise, so this is how he starts his day four times a week. He also does resistance training in the gym twice a week.
